Bennett University PhD Admission 2022-23 Eligibility Criteria

  • For Computer Science Engineering and Technology
    • Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 50% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 5.5 on a 10-point scale in relevant program in M.Tech/MCA/ME/MSc/MS in any discipline from recognized University.
  • For Engineering and Applied Sciences
  • Academic Requirements (Minimum Qualifications): 60% Marks or a minimum CGPA of 6.5 on a 10-point scale in relevant program in M.E./M.Tech./M.Sc./M.Phil.
  • For Law
    • The applicant should have obtained a master’s degree in Law/any other discipline from a recognized University with not less than 55% marks or its equivalent; provided that candidates with qualifications in social sciences, humanities and sciences may be admitted to the program, if the research they wish to pursue, interfaces with the discipline of law.
    • Candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination but awaiting results are also eligible to apply, provided that the result of the qualifying examination shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of Registration failing which their candidature shall be cancelled.
    • Applicants with more than 3 years industry/ teaching/ practicing/ managerial/ professional experience would be given preference.
  • For Management
    • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D Program shall have a Master’s degree, or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 60 %marks or with Aggregate CGPA of 6.5 on a scale of 10 (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).
    • Professional qualification such as CA/ ICWA/CS with any Under-graduate Degree are also eligible to apply. Any equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • For Journalism and Mass Communication
    • Candidates applying for the Ph.D. program should have a master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in UGC 7-point scale. Candidates with a master’s degree in other domains of social sciences are also eligible to apply, provided their area of research is essentially from mass communication.
  • For School of Liberal Arts
    • Since the School of Liberal Arts is strongly devoted to inter-disciplinary research, candidates with a master’s degree in any discipline from a recognized University with minimum 55% marks (or its equivalent grade) will be allowed to apply. The suitability of the educational qualifications will be determined by the school based on the area that the candidate wants to undertake the research on.

Note: Candidates who have appeared previously for Ph.D. admission, and not selected, shall not be eligible to apply for minimum one year, since last attempt.

Admission Process

The shortlisting of applications for admission test/interview will be done by the doctoral admission committee of respective schools, based on the profile of applicant as provided in the application form.

The applicants, who fulfil the eligibility criteria and are shortlisted, shall be put through:

FOR SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND APPLIED SCIENCES

  • Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University.
  • The process of Interview by a nominated committee of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • During the personal interview, the applicant will be assessed on his interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of research and his past academic and research performances.

FOR SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

  • Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University.
  • The process of Interview by a nominated committee of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  • During the personal interview, the applicant will be assessed on his interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of research and his past academic and research performances.

FOR Law

  • Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University.
  • Presentation of Preliminary Research Proposal and Interview: The candidates appearing in BRAT, shall be required to present their preliminary research proposal, (candidates thus, will have to submit/upload the same along with online application). The candidate shall also be interviewed to asses his/her interest and motivation in doing research, conceptual clarity on chosen area of research and his/her past academic and research performances.

FOR Management

  • Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University.
  • The shortlisted students after written examination shall be invited for an interview/viva-voce to be organized by the SOM. The candidates would be required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation before a duly constituted Department Research Committee.

FOR Media

  • Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT) – a written test conducted by the University.
  • The shortlisted candidates after written examination shall be invited for the presentation and viva before a selection committee. The presentation should demonstrate the candidate’s knowledge of the subject domain and his/her research orientation and abilities.

For School of Liberal Arts (SoLA)

  • Evaluating the statement of purpose, describing the area of interest of the researcher and how the education/work experience enables the candidate to undertake the research.
  • An entrance exam (Candidates who have cleared the NET or UGC/CSIR (JRF) /ICAR or SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship holder shall be exempted from the entrance examination during the period of validity of the concerned test. They will however be required to appear for the Personal Interview.
  • Interview

Details of Written Tests (Weightage, Syllabus, Duration etc.)

The weightage for admission, in the written examination shall be 70% marks viz 30% marks in the interview.

Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Engineering and Applied Sciences)

  • The syllabus of examination for the written test shall be same as for UGC NET/CSIR/GATE/GRE examinations:
  • Each candidate shall take the written test in relevant area /field to the student’s discipline.
  • The test will typically be of one-hour duration. The questions in the test may be both objective as well as subjective.
  • For Biotechnology: Submission of research statement (to test the writing skill of the candidate). The question paper will be completely objective for duration of 1.5 hours.

Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Law)

  • The syllabus of the examination for the written test shall comprise of contemporary issues on public policy development.
  • The written test will also assess the candidate based on the interface of law with humanities /Business Administration/ Science & Technology/English with sufficient options to choose from student’s relevant discipline.
  • The test will be typically of 2-hour duration and the questions in the test may be objective and/or subjective.

Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Management)

  • Duration – 2 hours
  • Number of Sections – Two – Each carrying 50 percent weightage and only subjective questions will be asked
    • Section A: Research Methodology: The syllabus for Research Methodology section shall be same as for any course on Business Research Methods and Processes in Social Sciences. The candidates are expected to demonstrate knowledge of research processes and understanding of quantitative and qualitative research paradigms. Also, the candidates should be able to identify, explain, and compare, the key elements of a research proposal/report.
    • Section B: Principles of Management: The syllabus for Principles of Management shall include, knowledge about basic functions and skills under management, management theories and philosophies and their application, understanding of the relationship between strategic, tactical, and operational plans. Also, they should be able to recognize the part communication plays in the management function.

Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Media)

  • The syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of general aptitude and knowledge of media domains, basis research methodology and communication research methods and theories of mass communication.
  • The test will be of 90 minutes and shall consist of objective questions.
  • Candidates are expected to pass the written test with minimum 50% marks to be able to qualify for the viva.

Bennett Research Aptitude Test (BRAT – Liberal Arts)

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • 25 marks for the general test, consisting of tests of vocabulary, comprehension, logic and data interpretation.
  • 45 marks for the subject test.
  • The candidate must score minimum 50% marks in the entrance test to qualify for the interview.
  • The candidate’s competence and required knowledge for the proposed research;
  • the research work area matches with the research interests of the School’s faculty members
  • the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge. The candidates will have to upload the research proposal at the time of submitting the application form.

Note

  • There shall be no exemptions from written test and Interviews except School or Liberal Arts.
  • The University reserves the right to revise or change the pattern of admission/written test with prior notification
