Eligibility Criteria for University of Burdwan PhD Admission 2022

For PhD Program

  • Candidates holding the Master’s Degree of any UGC recognized university or a professional degree considered to be equivalent to the Master’s Degree of the University of Burdwan in the subject concerned or allied/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, may apply to the concerned Secretary of the Faculty Council for Post- graduate Studies concerned in the prescribed form for admission to the Ph.D. Programme in any of the subjects in which the Doctoral Degree may have been insituated.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50% or equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/Differently Abled candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
  • The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualification marks without including the grace mark procedures.

For MPhil Program

  • Candidates holding the Master’s Degree of any UGC recognized university or a professional degree considered to be equivalent to the Master’s Degree of The University of Burdwan in the subject concerned or allied/relevant subject, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, may apply to the concerned Secretary of the Faculty Council for Post- graduate Studies concerned in the prescribed form for admission to the M. Phil. Programme.

Admission Process

  • For getting admission to the M. Phil./Ph. D. Programme, a candidate shall have to appear primarily at the primary viva-voce to be conducted through Google Meet by the concerned department where the candidate intends to get admission. The link for the same will be forwarded to the registered email ID of the applicant in due course and after notification.
  • Each candidate has to secure minimum qualifying marks of 50% in the
    primary viva-voce to qualify for the final viva-voce.
  • The syllabus of the primary viva voce shall cover two sections, viz, research methodology and the specific subject.

Exemption from Preliminary Viva Voce

Candidates who have a full-time regular M. Phil. Degree with course work or have qualified in the UGC-NET (including JRF)/ SET/SLET/GATE or teacher fellowship shall be exempted from appearing at the primary viva-voce and they will appear directly in the Final viva voce for admission to M.Phil. Programme (2021-23), Ph.D. (2021).

Final Interview

  • After qualifying in the primary viva-voce by securing a minimum qualifying marks of 50% and/or all the exempted candidates, will have to appear for the final interview of 30 marks to be conducted by the Doctoral Committee of each subject/departments and the date of the said final Interview will be notified later on in the university website (www.buruniv.ac.in).
  • At the time of interview, the Doctoral Committee will objectively assess the research interest of the candidate in the relevant field/ area as well as his/her past academic records, and award marks as per the following guidelines:
    • Academic Records: 20 Marks
    • Viva–voce : 30 Marks
    • Total : 50 Marks

Eligibility Criteria for University of Burdwan PhD Admission 2021

For M.Phil/ PhD 

Master’s Degree or a Professional Degree considered equivalent to the Master’s Degree of the University of Burdwan.

For Foreign Students

 An equivalent degree accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

Minimum Marks

At least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC-7 point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) in concerned or allied subjects at Post Graduate or at equivalent level.

Relaxation for SC/ST/OBCA/OBCB/DA

5% of marks or equivalent in case of grade

In-service Applicants

Necessary document of permission from their employer –

Ph.D – No Objection Certificate with appropriate Study Leave granted for the period of one Semester of Course work.

M.Phil – No Objection Certificate with study leave for the entire period of four semesters

State Funded Fellowships

NET/SET/SLET /GATE (in addition to above eligibility). Existing Ph.D Scholars can also apply.

Admission Process

Candidates will be admitted by holding Viva Voce in virtual platform of Google Meet (link to be forwarded in registered e-mail id of applicants) in two stages as detailed below:

  • I : Preliminary Viva Voce
  • II : Final Viva Voce

Candidates securing a minimum qualifying mark of 50% in the Preliminary Viva Voce will appear in Final Viva Voce.

Viva Voce shall cover two sections, viz, Research Methodology and Area of Research.

Exemption from Preliminary Viva Voce

Candidates with a full-time regular M. Phil. Degree with course work/ UGC-CSIR/ UGC-NET (including JRF)/ SET/SLET/ GATE or Teacher Fellowship

Final Interview

Candidates qualifying in the Preliminary Viva Voce with a minimum qualifying marks of 50% and Candidates with a full-time regular M. Phil. Degrees with course work/ UGC-CSIR/ UGC-NET (including JRF)/ SET/SLET/ GATE or Teacher Fellowship will appear in Final Viva Voce of 20 marks.
