Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) Kolkata is a leading autonomous Institution under the Department of Atomic Energy, Govt of India, conducting basic research in frontiers of Physical and Biophysical Sciences.

About PhD Program

  • Students are invited to join the Ph.D. Programme of SINP in Physics and Biophysical Sciences
  • The curriculum starts with a one-year pre-PhD course work (called Post-M.Sc. programme)
  • For the Physics stream, Post-M.Sc. courses are channeled through two streams: Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics.

Openings for Ph.D. may be available in the following broad areas

  • Physics
    • Theoretical Physics: Theoretical high energy physics, non-perturbative quantum field theory, gauge theories, classical and quantum computation, strongly correlated systems, QCD, quantum condensed matter physics
    • Experimental Physics: Nuclear Astrophysics and low energy nuclear reactions, Semiconductor materials and devices, Surface Physics, Nano Science,  Quantum Optics and Cold Atoms, Experimental High Energy at ALICE and CMS, Muon Tomography, Astro-Particle physics, Gravitational waves (LIGO).
  • Biophysical Sciences
    • Cellular and molecular biology, biophysics & structural biology, synthetic biology, metabolomics, proteomics, spectroscopy.

Eligibility Criteria for SINP Kolkata PhD Admissions Aug 2022

PhysicsM.Sc. in Physics.
Biophysical SciencesM.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry (with Life Science at 10+2 level) or M.Sc. in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or M.Tech. in Biotechnology (with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Life Science at 10+2 level).

Students appearing in the final exams for their M.Sc. degrees during the current academic session may also apply. However, their selection will be on a provisional basis and admission will be subject to successfully passing the final exam in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP.

Selection Procedure for SINP Kolkata PhD Admissions Aug 2022

Screening will be done on the previous academic records of the applicants and the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below –

For Physics

For Biophysical Sciences

  • Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR
  • CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR NET for JRF
  • GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry

A shortlist of candidates will be published on website. The shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews to be held “ONLINE” .

The shortlisted candidates will be informed by email also.

Final selection of candidates will be made on the basis of their past performances and interviews.

Selected candidates will be informed by email and also through announcement in website.

Fellowships & Benefits

The selected students are admitted to Post M.Sc. as Junior Research Fellow (JRF).

Fellowships

  • ₹31,000/- p.m. for 1st two years
  • ₹35,000/- p.m. for subsequent years

Tenure

4 years extendible to the 5th year. Yearly reneweals and 5thyear extensions are subject to satisfactory performances.

Contingency, HRA, etc. are as per rules.

For all candidates, limited hostel accommodation will also be available.

Shortlisting Criteria

Theoretical physics: Ranks up to 150 in JEST or NET or ranks up to 50 in GATE along with 60% and above marks in 10+2 final exam and Graduation.

Experimental physics: Ranks up to 200 in JEST or NET or ranks up to 100 in GATE along with 60% and above marks in 10+2 final exam and Graduation.

Biophysical Sciences : Ranks up to 1000 in GATE along with 60% and above marks in 10+2 final exam and Graduation. 
CSIR,UGC,ICMR,JGEEBILS scores have also been considered.
