About PhD Program
- Students are invited to join the Ph.D. programme of SINP in Physics and Biophysical Sciences
- The curriculum starts with a one-year pre-PhD course work (called Post-M.Sc. courses)
- For the Physics stream, Post-M.Sc. courses are channelled through two streams: Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics.

Eligibility Criteria for SINP Kolkata PhD Admissions 2021
|Physics||M.Sc. in Physics.|
|Biophysical Sciences||M.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry (with Life Science at 10+2 level) or M.Sc. in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or M.Tech. in Biotechnology (with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Life Science at 10+2 level).|
Students appearing in the final exams for their M.Sc. degrees during the current academic session may also apply. However, their selection will be on a provisional basis and admission will be subject to successfully passing the final exam in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP.

Selection Procedure for SINP Kolkata PhD Admissions 2021
Screening will be done on the previous academic records of the applicants and the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below –
- Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)
- GATE Physics
- CSIR/UGC NET for JRF in Physics
For Biophysical Sciences
- Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR
- CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR NET for JRF
- GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry
Fellowships & Benefits
The selected students are admitted to Post M.Sc. as Junior Research Fellow (JRF).
₹31,000/- p.m. for 1st two years (JRF)
₹35,000/- p.m. for subsequent years (SRF)
4 years extendible to the 5th year. Yearly reneweals and 5thyear extensions are subject to satisfactory performances.
There is a possibility of selecting some JRFs carrying extramural funds. Extramural fellowships are awarded by external funding authorities of the Govt of India (UGC, CSIR, DBT and ICMR) to candidates who are selected through NET.
