Scientists and students at NBRC come from diverse academic backgrounds, including biological, computational, mathematical, physical, engineering and medical sciences, and use multidisciplinary approaches to unravel function under healthy and pathological conditions.
Located in the foothills of the Aravali range in Manesar, Haryana, NBRC is an autonomous institute funded by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and is also a Deemed-to-be University. NBRC has been recognised as an Institution of Excellence by Govt. of India.
Ph.D. (Neuroscience) at NBRC
National Brain Research Centre (NBRC) conducts advanced research in different areas of the interdisciplinary field of Neuroscience.
Given the fact that modern day neuroscience is highly interdisciplinary in nature and relies on a spectrum of techniques spanning different disciplines, students from diverse academic backgrounds are encouraged to join NBRC and excel in neuroscience research. Here Ph.D. students come from vastly different backgrounds such as Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering and Medical Sciences.
To gain an all-round perspective of neuroscience, you will undergo one year of coursework, where you will learn from molecular to computational neuroscience. You will also get an opportunity to rotate in various labs to get a closer look at the research work, and zero-in on what excites you the most.
Channels for applying in PhD Neuroscience
NBRC accepts PhD admissions through JGEEBILS Dec 2022 (Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences)
NBRC accepts applications from candidates who qualify Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST 2023) (for Physics).
NBRC accepts applications from candidates who qualify Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE-2022/GATE-2023) in Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics / Electrical Engineering / Electronics and Communications Engineering / Computer Science and Information Technology / Instrumentation Engineering / Life Sciences.
External Fellowship Channel
CSIR / UGC / DBT / ICMR examination for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Biology / Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics. Validity of the fellowship should be such that it can be activated on 31st August, 2023 or later.
UGC-NET JRF qualified on / after Dec 2021.
Based on their performance in any of the above qualifying examinations, candidates will be short-listed for interviews to be held at NBRC.

- Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of Science such as Life Sciences / Pharmacy / Physics / Mathematics / Chemistry / Computer applications / Statistics / Veterinary Science / Psychology from a recognized Institute or University.
- Candidates having four-year course leading to Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Technology / Engineering / Medicine from a recognized Institute or University are also eligible.
- Candidates those who are appearing in final year of the qualifying examination are also eligible to apply.
- Minimum 55% Marks (50% for SC / ST / PH candidates) or an equivalent grade from secondary (10th) examination onwards is required.
- Percentage should be calculated up to two decimal points to determine their eligibility.
All admitted candidates receive a Junior Research Fellowship of ₹ 31,000 per month + HRA (in lieu of hostel accommodation) for the first two years.
After two years, you will be eligible for a Senior Research Fellowship of ₹ 35,000 per month + HRA (in lieu of hostel accommodation).

Candidates who want to apply by offline mode can send a self-addressed A-4 size envelope to Registrar, National Brain Research Centre, Manesar-122052 Dist. Gurgaon (Haryana) indicating Programme & channel by which they wish to apply.

Step 2 – Apply or Qualify JGEEBILS/ JEST /GATE/ External Fellowship as mentioned earlier.

No application fee will be applicable for candidates having JRF / LS who have applied / are applying through JGEEBILS / JEST / GATE channels.
