JNU PhD admission 2021 – JNU Delhi invites application for PhD admission. JNU PhD admission 2021 is primarily based on a Computer Based Test (CBT) conducted by the University. CSIR/UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) qualified candidates are, however, exempted from the test and are directly called for an Interview round.

JNU PhD Admission 2021 Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria required to qualify for admission to JNU’s PhD programme is mentioned below:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  • Or M.Phil. Course work with minimum 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks or an equivalent relaxation of grade for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled.

PhD Admission Process

The candidates are admitted on the basis of their performance in the CBT.

The candidates who qualify minimum 50 % marks for General Category and 45 % marks for OBC (non-creamy layer)/PWD SC/ST category in the Computer Based Test (CBT) shall be called for viva-voce examination.

Merit lists are prepared for each category separately and on the basis of performance of candidates in CBT and Viva-voce.

JRF qualified candidates will be exempted from CBT.

Admission of JRF holders

Only those candidates who fulfil the minimum eligibility requirements as prescribed in the brochure and have qualified for Junior Research Fellowship through CSIR/UGC NET examination are eligible to apply separately.

Such candidates are required to appear for an interview and their selection will be based on their performance in the interview.

Candidates those appeared in the CSIR/UGC NET examination but results are awaited may also apply but they will be interviewed upon submission of a valid proof of having qualified for JRF at the time of interview.

School of Physical Sciences

The research emphasis of the Physics group has been on topics in Condensed Matter Physics, Chemical Physics, Disordered Systems, High Energy Physics, Mathematical Physics, Neutrino Physics, Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, Non-linear Dynamics, Quantum Chaos and String Theory. Active research is also being carried out in the areas of Complex Fluids, Superconductivity, Magnetism, Semiconductors, Mesoscopic Systems, Polymers, Bio and Nano Materials. Strongly Coorelated and Frustrated systems and Topological Materials.

Eligibility for Physical Sciences

Candidates who have obtained M.Sc. degree (2 years programme or 5 years Integrated programme) from a recognized University/Institution in Physics with at least 55% marks or equivalent Grade.


Candidate has obtained 2 years M Phil Degree from a recognized University/Institution for the corresponding subject with at least 55% marks (with seminar/dissertation/ viva) or one year M Phil with minimum 55% marks with the corresponding subject and having one year research experience of a recognized University/Institution and one publication and 55% marks or equivalent in M.Sc.

Relaxation as per the UGC Regulations 2016 to SC/ST/OBC (Non creamy layer)/ Differently abled persons.
