The selected candidates will receive the offer letter for joining shortly after the interview.

IISER Kolkata PhD Physical Sciences Admission 2021

Minimum Eligibility criteria

  • Masters degree with at least 60% aggregate marks in any field of Physical Sciences for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program.
  • Final year post-graduate students who are yet to obtain their degree may also apply; however, they must complete the MSc/MS degree at the time of admission with the requisite 60% aggregate marks.
  • Additional or desirable background is necessary for some topics, and it is mentioned in parenthesis wherever applicable.
  • Reservations for SC/ST/OBC candidates are applicable as per Government of India rules.

There are two channels of admission.

Channel 1: Self Funded category

Channel 2: Institute Funded category

Channel 1: Self Funded category

  • For this category apart from satisfying minimal eligibility criteria, candidates must have their own PhD fellowships such as CSIR-NET/UGC JRF, INSPIRE or any other equivalent fellowships.

Experimental

  1. Phase Transitions, Spectroscopy and transport in high magnetic fields (pulsed field).
  2. Spin-orbit Photonics and Quantum weak measurements in nano-photonics.
  3. Experimental condensed matter physics:
    (i) Electronic band structure calculations,
    (ii) Photoemission spectroscopy,
    (iii) Optical, magnetic and electronic properties of Nanomaterials.
  4. Quantum Information Processing using NV centres in diamond.
  5. Topological Insulators, Majorana Fermions and Weyl Semi-metals.
  6. Nonlinear optical phenomena in semiconductors and other solid-state materials. Research topic :
    (i). Study of nonlinear optical properties of various organic and inorganic materials.
    (ii). Laser spectroscopic study of optoelectronic properties of materials
  7. Microscopic time resolved experiments, Ultrafast and Terahertz Spectroscopy.

Theoretical/Computational

  1. Non-linear dynamics (Background: MSc in Physics, Mathematics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics. Proficiency in programming is necessary.)
  2. Biological physics, Nonlinear dynamics, Statistical physics, soft condensed matter physics:
    Topic: To develop theoretical and computational models to understand the collective dynamics of active, out of equilibrium systems by using the tools from statistical physics, nonlinear dynamics, and soft condensed matter physics.
  3. Complex Adaptive Systems and Network dynamics.
  4. Analysis of biological and social systems using a variety of tools like non-linear dynamics, stochastic processes, networks etc.
  5. Gravitational Physics.
  6. Condensed Matter Physics: Topics:
    (a) Interplay of interactions and inhomogeneities in strongly correlated condensed quantum phases of matter,
    (b) Role of quantum fluctuations on glassy and hexatic phases of matter.
  7. Nonequilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems.
  8. Topological matter and Majorana fermions.
  9. Graphene Moire Superlattices

Channel 2: Institute Funded category

  • For candidates in this category apart from satisfying minimal eligibility criteria, candidates must have qualified in GATE or JEST or NET-LS examinations.
  • A cut-off score for each will be decided based on the number of applications.
