IISER Kolkata MSc Admission 2022 Eligibility Criteria

For MSc Mathematics

Eligibility

• Students with a B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech. or an equivalent degree from any recognized University/Institute/College with Mathematics as one of the honours/major subjects can apply.

Minimum Qualifying marks

• Candidates need to secure a minimum of 55% marks/equivalent grades in honours/major (if applicable), or 55% marks/equivalent grades in Aggregate (if honours/major is not applicable).
• Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 55% based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held till the date of submission of the application form.
• JAM-Mathematics is not essential for applying for MSc in Mathematics.

For MSc Chemistry

Eligibility

• Students with a Bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as a subject for three years, or an equivalent degree from any recognized university/institute/college can apply for the Two-Year M.Sc. programme in the Department of Chemical Sciences.

Minimum Qualifying marks

• Candidates need to secure a minimum of 60% marks/equivalent grades in Honors/Major (if applicable), or 60% marks/equivalent grades in aggregate (if Honors/Major is not applicable).
• Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% marks/equivalent based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held till the date of submission of the application form.

Who Can Apply

• Please note that applicants who have qualified in the following nation-wide aptitude tests in the year 2021 or 2022 only can apply for the programme: JAM (Chemistry).

• Eligible Candidates can apply online through the official website https://apply.iiserkol.ac.in/
• Applicants should save the properly filled application form and take the printout.

Selection Procedure

For MSc Mathematics                     

• MSc-Mathematics Entrance Test (subjective-3 hours) will be held at IISER Kolkata (Refer to Syllabus).
• The Institute will declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website.
• Candidates must produce the final marksheet to the Academic Office within 60 days of their admission and having secured a minimum of 55% of marks/equivalent grades in honours/major (if applicable), or 55% marks/equivalent grades in aggregate (if honours/major is not applicable).
• If one finally does not obtain 55% marks, then the studentship will stand cancelled.

Documents required to appear in the entrance test

• A hard copy of the application
• A proof of identity along with a print out of the same to appear for the test. Aadhaar card or voter ID card may serve as a valid document.

Syllabus for the MSc Mathematics Entrance Test

• Analysis
  • Sequence and series of real numbers and functions, continuity and differentiability of real valued functions of one variable and applications, uniform convergence, Riemann integration, improper integrals, continuity and differentiability of real valued functions of several variables, partial derivatives and mixed partial derivatives, total derivative.
• Algebra
  • Set Theory: Sets, relations, functions, countable & uncountable sets.
  • Group Theory: Groups, subgroups, cyclic groups, homomorphisms, Lagrange’s theorem, normal subgroups.
  • Rings: Rings and ideals, quotients, homomorphism and isomorphism theorems, maximal ideals, prime ideals, integral domains.
  • Linear Algebra: Vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence, dimension; linear transformations, matrices, determinant, rank-nullity theorem, solution of linear system of equations, eigen values, eigen vectors, diagonalizability.

For MSc Chemistry

• A department/institute-level committee duly approved by the competent authority will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of candidates, who will be called for the interview.
• Based on the JAM (Chemistry) rank applications will be shortlisted and called for interview. Candidates will be selected on the basis of the interview performance.
• The results will be displayed in the institute website and NO separate e-mail/hard copies will be circulated/sent.

Chemical Sciences

• Interview shall be conducted via online mode.
• All relevant information will be shared shortly through an email from the Department of Chemical Sciences.

• Note that on the 29th of May Written test will start at 10 A.M. at Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), IISER Kolkata, main campus, Mohanpur from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
• In addition, for verification purpose, you have to bring following documents and keep it with you during the written test:
  • A photo ID proof (Aadhaar/Voter ID/Pan/Driving Licence/Passport)
  • Hard copy of your PhD application with signature
• People selected on the basis of the written test have to produce the marksheet in its original form in sync with the application form at the time of admission, failure, to which will result in cancellation of his/her candidature.
• Mobile phones inside the examination hall are strictly prohibited. If anyone found violating this instruction, his/her candidature will be cancelled.
• Results of Written test (i.e List of selected candidates for admission to MSc curriculum) will be published or announced around 12 P.M on 7th June 2022.
