Category of Students

• Regular
  • A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. 
  • He/she may get a fellowship/assistantship, or may be self-financed.
• Sponsored (full-time or part-time)
  • A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a fulltime or part-time basis. 
  • He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field.
  • The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
  • A sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
  • A full time student will take leave from his/her institute and spend his full time at the Institute.
  • A part-time student will pursue the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service.

IIIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2023 Eligibility Criteria

For admission to the PhD Programme in various disciplines a candidate must satisfy the following criteria:

Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)

• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
• Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks. OR
• MSc (CS) / MSc (IT) /MCA or equivalent Non-Tech Master’s Degree with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)

• Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
• Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.

Mathematics

• Master’s degree in Mathematics in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

Humanities and Social Sciences

• Master’s degree in English/Comparative Literature/Cultural Studies/Economics/Political Science/ Linguistics/other relevant areas with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
• Candidates with MPhil degree/ NET-JRF will be given preference.

For candidates with a B.Tech/MA/MSc, preference will be given to those who have cleared GATE/NET/JRF. Selection through GATE/NET is required for some courses.

Fee Structure

*The candidate needs to pay the hostel and mess fees only when a student joins a hostel. Hostel rent will be charged on a pro-rata basis (semester of 6 months with a charge of 12,500/- for the whole semester) based on when the student joins a hostel.

Selection Procedure

• Shortlisting will be done based on the availability of seats and the academic performance of the candidates.
• A candidate merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria may not be shortlisted.
• There will be no support for travel for the interview.
