Eligibility Criteria for Goa University PhD Admission 2023 (Feb)
Admission to the Ph.D. Programmes for the 2023 (Feb) session is open to the following candidates:
- Candidates who have qualified in the Examinations of apex bodies such as CSIRUGC/UGC NET-JRF/lectureship/DBT-JRF/SET/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET Examination of different Indian States/ GATE with a valid certificate, those having DST Inspire fellowship, or those awarded M.Phil. Degree as per the UGC Guidelines. Students who have completed M. Phil Degree by distance mode are not eligible
- All the candidates who are qualified in the Goa University Ph.D. Entrance Test (GU-PET) conducted by this University held in the month of August 2021 and August 2022.
- Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified but exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test. However, they will not be issued an Equivalence Certificate.
Eligibility Criteria
- Master’s Degree or a Professional Degree declared equivalent to the Master’s Degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate, or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7 point scale(or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).
- A relaxation of 5% marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be given for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy Layer)/Persons with Disabilities and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s Degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace marks.
- The subject of research shall be that which relates to the main branch/ branches of knowledge chosen by the candidate for the post-graduate Degree. However, a candidate wishing to conduct research in a subject of an interdisciplinary character shall also be eligible for registration. The applications of such candidates shall be considered by following the procedure set out under OA19A.2(ii). The candidates are permitted to apply for the Ph.D. Programmes in a maximum of three subject.
- The following conversion formula shall be followed as per Ordinance OA-16 for candidates of Goa University. Other University candidates shall also follow this formula in the absence of a conversion factor provided by their parent University:
- Conversion from Grade to Percentage – The following formula shall be used to convert from Grade (CGPA) to equivalent Percentage. Percentage = (CGPA – 0.75) × 10
Goa University PhD Admission 2023 (Feb) Application Process
- Candidates are required to apply on online on the GUMS Portal.
- Please read the instructions and proceed for online application portal
- Documents to be uploaded at the time of submitting the online application –
- a) Statement of Marks of Post-Graduation
- b) Certificate of Passing M.Phil CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/ lectureship, DBTJRF,SET/SLET /JEST/ICAR-NET/ NET/SET/JRF/GATE/GPAT/GU-PET etc. Examinations.
- c) Marksheets of M.Phil CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/ lectureship, DBTJRF,SET/SLET/JEST/ ICAR-NET/NET/SET/JRF/GATE/GPAT/GU-PET etc. Examinations indicating marks scored.
- d) Valid Category Certificate (if applicable); OBC (non-creamy layer) Certificate is valid for 3 years.
- e) EWS Category candidates are required to submit a certificate issued to that effect by the Officer of the rank of the Mamlatdar or any other Authorized Officer as notified by the Government of Goa.

Applicants are eligible to apply for a maximum three Programmes.
Goa University PhD Admission Selection Process
- While grading the candidates for admission to Ph.D. Programme, a weightage of 70% shall be given for the Entrance Test and 30% to the performance in the Interview/Viva-Voce.
- A Candidate shall be required to score a minimum of 50% marks at the Interview. (5% relaxation for SC/ST/OBC(NCL)/Person with Disability, or other categories of Candidates as specified by the State Government).
Criteria
- The Candidates who have cleared any of the National or State Level Tests like M.Phil CSIRUGC/UGC NET/JRF/ lectureship/DBTJRF/ SET/SLET/JEST/ ICAR-NET/GATE/GPAT/GU-PET etc. Examinations shall be admitted by normalizing their marks/score/ percentage in such tests with respect to 70% component of GU-PET.
- For normalizing the marks obtained in National Level and State Level Tests, the following formula shall be used.
- Normalized % Marks = 70 – [0.45 x (100 – Obtained % Marks)]
- Provided that in case of the Candidates who do not possess certificates of the National or State level tests / fellowships mentioned above showing the score earned by the Candidates, the percentage score obtained by them at Master’s level shall be considered for normalizing.
- In case of Candidates with GPAT score, obtained marks shall be calculated by dividing the GPAT score by 5 and then normalised using the above formula.
- In case of Candidates with M. Phil. normalized marks shall be equal to percentage marks scored by the candidate times 0.7.
- The actual marks scored by candidates at the GU-PET shall be treated as normalised marks.
- Senior Citizens shall be deemed to have scored 50% marks in the GU-PET.
- There shall be two rounds of interviews;
- (a) For candidates who have qualified the M.Phil /CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/lectureship/DBT JRF/SET/SLET Examinations
- (b) For candidate who have qualified the GU-PET and Senior Citizens.
- Candidate shall be admitted to the Ph.D. Programme in the respective Schools/Research Centres only against the predetermined number vacancies announced in this Notification.
- In case of a tie in scores, preference shall be given to those who have been awarded like M.Phil/CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/lectureship/DBT JRF/SET/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET/GATE/GPAT over GU-PET qualified candidates in that order. If the tie still persists then interview performance shall be used as a tiebreaker

Goa University PhD Entrance Test (GU-PET) Aug 2022
Candidates interested in seeking admission to the Ph.D. Programme offered at the University Schools/Recognized Research Centres are required to either have qualified M.Phil/CSIR-UGC/UGC NET
JRF/Lectureship/SET/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET/GATE/GPAT Certificate or have a valid GU-PET Certificate.
Applications for admission to the Ph.D. Programme shall be notified separately.
Important Points
- Candidates who have qualified at any of the National level Tests such as CSIR-UGC/UGC NET JRF/Lectureship/SET/SLET/JEST/ICAR-NET Examinations of different Indian States, GATE/GPAT with a valid Certificate. ARE NOT REQUIRED to apply for the GU-PET.
- Regular M.Phil. Degree holders are also exempted from appearing at the GU-PET.
- Candidates who have completed M.Phil. through distance mode are not exempted from answering the GU-PET.
- Senior Citizens who are otherwise qualified shall also be exempted from appearing at the Ph.D. Entrance Test [GU-PET].
