Categories of PhD Candidates

There shall be three categories of Ph.D. candidates:

• Full-time candidates
• Part-time candidates(Internal)
• Part-time candidates(External)

Eligibility Criteria for Gandhigram Rural University PhD Admission 2023

• Candidates (Indian / Foreigner) who have studied under 10+2+3+2 years or 10+2+5 years or 11+1+3+2 or 10+2+3+3 or 10+2+4+2 pattern of education and qualified for the award of the Master’s Degree in the relevant discipline at Gandhigram Rural Institute – Deemed to be University (GRIDTBU) or any other university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in the relevant discipline with not less than 55% marks. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, shall be allowed for those belonging to SC / ST / OBC (non-creamy layer) / Differently Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991.
• In addition, he / she should have qualified at the entrance test and interview conducted By GRI. OR should have obtained M.Phil or qualified the UGC – JRF / NET / SLET / Lecturership / GATE / CSIR / ICAR / ICSSR or other fellowships or passed equivalent examinations.
• Candidates with UGC – JRF / NET / GATE / CSIR / ICAR / ICSSR fellowship and such other fellowships approved by GoI shall be admitted any time, followed by an interview.

• Applications can be submitted online only through official website https://www.ruraluniv.ac.in/
• Before starting to fill up the application form, read the e-prospectus carefully and get ready with the following documents.
  • Recent passport size color photo in JPG format (Max.size:100kb)
  • Signature in JPG format (Max.size:20kb)
  • Community Certificate (Max.size:100kb)
  • EWS Certificate (Max.size:300kb)(If applicable)
  • PG Mark Statement in JPG format (Max.size:300kb)
  • M.Phil. Mark Statement (if applicable) in JPG format (Max.size:300kb)
  • No Objection Certificate (if applicable) in the prescribed format in JPG format (Max.size:300kb)  Download NOC Certificate
  • Research Proposal-Not exceeding 500 words – single page in JPG format. (Max.size: 300kb)
  • Differently Abled Certificate (if applicable) in JPG format (Max.size:300kb)
• Fill the application carefully – Upload the required documents – Make online payment – Finally ensure Final Submit – Download your application in PDF format for your reference.
• After Final Submit you cannot edit the application.
• Cost of the application is Rs.2000
• Online Entrance Test can be preferred. If preferred Rs.1000 will be added to the application cost. Online entrance test and interview restricted to candidates from far off places like, North east, Kashmir, Ladakh, Andaman’s and Lakshadweep
• Payment can be made only by online mode.
• SC/ST applicants can have the application free of cost by submitting the required details.

Admission Procedure

• A Common Entrance Test will be conducted through both online and offline by the Controller of Examinations for the eligible candidates as detailed below: This pattern is applicable for Indian, NRI and foreign students.
  • Question paper pattern for Research Aptitude Test
    • Duration – 1 hour
    • Type – Multiple Choice Questions
    • Marks – 50 (50×1)
  • Question paper pattern for Subject Test (Descriptive)
    • Duration – 1 hour
    • Distribution – 5 out of 7 questions
    • Marks – Each question carries 10 Marks (5×10)
• A minimum of 60% in each component is a must to become eligible for attending the interview and for SC/ST applicants a minimum of 50% in each component is eligible for attending the interview. Question papers for Research Aptitude Test (General) and Subject Test will be set and evaluated by a Board consisting of the HOD and the Research Supervisors concerned.
• There will be an Admission Committee consisting of the Dean/ HoD / Director of the School/Department/ Centre and the recognized supervisors of the School/Department/ Centre. During the interview, the candidates shall present their research area/concept and a research supervisor will be allotted at the time of interview, if the candidate is selected for the Ph.D programme.
• Provisional admission will be made as per the reservation policy of the Government of India / UGC. The reservation roster will be prepared as per vacancies that exist during that session. The candidates who are admitted provisionally should produce the certificates related to their passing the PG programme latest by September/ March of that academic year.
