Fellowship
These amounts are expected to be enhanced in due course and the information will be updated on TIFR website.
PhD
Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 31,000 (+ hostel accommodation OR HRA as applicable) enhanced to Rs 35,000 after registration.
I-PhD
Students receive a monthly fellowship of Rs 21,000 for the first year. At the end of the first year, upon satisfactory performance, the fellowship is enhanced to Rs 31,000 per month (further raised to Rs 35,000 after registration for PhD). If a student takes the MSc exit option, then the fellowship for the 3rd year is reduced to the 1st year amount.
Provisional Admission
For students whose final examination results for their qualifying degree are not declared by the time of joining (appoximately end July/ beginning August): They will be admitted on a provisional basis, subject to their passing of the relevant degree examination. The admission will be regularised on production of marksheets / provisional / final degree certificate of the qualifying degree examination.
If the qualifying degree is a Bachelor’s degree (1st degree after Std. XII): Payment of fellowship will be withheld in full till documentary evidence is submitted of having completed the qualifying degree.
If the qualifying degree is a Master’s degree (and the student already has a Bachelor’s degree): Payment of fellowship will be at a lower rate (I-PhD) until documentary evidence is submitted of having completed the qualifying degree.
In both cases, once the admission is regularised, arrears will be paid per the rules.
TIFR GS 2024 Eligibility Criteria
The detailed TIFR GS Eligibility Criteria is given below.
Students appearing in their final year of qualifying degree can also apply.
Physics
- For Ph.D.Physics
- M.Sc./M.S. in Physics, or equivalent degree, on completion of programmes(s) of duration not less than 5 years in total.
- For I-Ph.D.Physics
- ME/ M Tech/ BSc/ BS/ BE/ B Tech or equivalent degree in Physics of duration not less than 3 years. Any other degree in Science / Engineering or equivalent, of duration not less than 3 years in total. (Students already having/ completing Master’s degree by July 2024 are not eligible for I-PhD)
Mathematics
- For Ph.D.Mathematics
- MA/ MSc/ M Math/ M Stat/ ME/ M Tech in any area of Mathematics/ Statistics/ Science/ Technology.
- For I-Ph.D. Mathematics
- BA/ BSc/ B Math/ B Stat/ BE/ B Tech in any area of Mathematics/ Statistics/ Science/ Technology.
Chemistry
- For Ph.D. Chemistry
- MSc/ M Tech/ M Pharm or equivalent degree. 4-year degree holders (e.g. BE/ BTech/ BPharm or equivalent) may be permitted to join as PhD students if they satisfy the criterion of a minimum aggregate score of 75%/ GPA 7.5 in their Bachelors’ degree. They will not be eligible for the MSc degree.
- For I-Ph.D. Chemistry
- 3-year BSc/ BS or equivalent degree. 4-year degree holders (e.g. BE/ B Tech/ B Pharm or equivalent) with aggregate score/GPA less than 75%/7.5 in their Bachelors’ degree may join as I-PhD students if they wish to obtain an MSc in addition to the PhD.
Biology
- For Ph.D. Biology
- Master’s degrees in any branch of Biology/Physics/ Chemistry/Computer Science/ Mathematics/ OR 5-year degrees (e.g. MBBS, BDS) OR professional Master’s Degrees (MPharm/ MTech).
- For I-Ph.D. Biology
- Bachelors in any branch of Biology/Physics/ Chemistry/Computer Science/ OR any 4-year degree program that awards a “Bachelor’s degree” including BTech, BE, BVSc, BPharm (4 year course). Candidates with a Master’s degree in non-Biology disciplines may join as I-PhD students if they wish to obtain an MSc in addition to the PhD.
- For M.Sc. (Wildlife Biology & Conservation)
- Indian nationals who have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (with a minimum of 50% in core subjects) and a strong interest in wildlife research and conservation. Graduate nationals from Central, South and Southeast Asian countries, with similar qualifications are also eligible to apply.
Computer & Learning, Information and Data Sciences
- For Ph.D.
- MTech/ ME/ MCA/ MSc or any other equivalent degree in Computer Science / Electronics & Communications Engineering / Electrical Engineering/ related branches Or Mathematics Or Physics. 4-year degree holders (e.g. B Tech/ BE/ BSc) may be permitted to join as PhD students if they satisfy the criterion of a minimum aggregate score of 75%/ GPA 7.5 in their Bachelors’ degree.
- For I-Ph.D.
- BSc (or any 3-year degree) in Computer Science/Electronics & Communications Engineering/Electrical Engineering/ related branches/ Mathematics Or Physics OR 4-year degree holders (e.g. B Tech/ BE/ BSc) scoring an aggregate score/GPA less than 75%/7.5 in their Bachelors’ degree.
Applied and Computational Mathematics
- For PhD
- MA/ MSc/ M Math/ M Stat/ ME/ M Tech in any area of Mathematics/ Statistics/ Science/ Technology.
Science Education
- For PhD
- Master’s degree in any subject with not less than 5 years of study after Std. XII
- *Post Graduate Diplomas do not qualify as Master’s degrees.
Physics of Life
- For PhD
- BE/B Tech/ME/ M Tech/ MSc/MS degrees in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Computer Science.

- If you are applying under the Fee Waiver category, the scanned copy of the recommendation letter from the Principal/HOD of your college.

- (1) Please enter your comments via the googleforms corresponding to your subject test. If you have queries/comments regarding more than one question, please use a NEW FORM PER QUESTION.
- (2) The above googleforms are the ONLY means of raising queries/ making comments about the provisional answer keys. If you have a different answer than the one in the answer key, you need to provide detailed explanations/ workings (text entered in a box or jpg/pdf upload of your workings) via the googleform.
- (3) All queries/comments received via the googleforms will receive due consideration by the subject test experts.
- (4) Emails or any other communication on this matter will not be accepted. The google forms will be closed on Thursday 21st December midnight. No further correspondence on this matter will be accepted.
- (5) The final answer keys to be used for shortlisting will be displayed on Tuesday 9th January 2024.
- (6) The next stage of selections (either interview or in-person test) will be displayed by each TIFR Centre/ Subject Board/ Campus when they finalize their shortlisting.
