What is GATE Exam?

Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a prestigious national-level exam that assesses candidates for comprehensive understanding in various undergraduate-level subjects in Engineering, Technology, Science, Architecture, and Humanities.

GATE exam is being conducted by IISc Bengaluru and seven IITs comprising IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee, on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India.

IIT Roorkee is the Organising Institute for GATE 2025.

Candidates who qualify in GATE can seek admission with possible financial assistance to Master’s programs and direct Doctoral programs in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, and Humanities; and Doctoral programs in relevant branches of Engineering, Science, and Humanities, in institutions supported by Ministry of Education (MoE) and other Government agencies. GATE score is also used by some colleges and institutions for admission to postgraduate programs without MoE scholarship. Several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) have also been using GATE score for recruitment.

Note:

  • The test papers will be in English. Candidates opting to appear in TWO test papers must have a primary choice of test paper. The second test paper must be chosen from the allowed combinations given in the table above. Combinations other than the listed ones are NOT allowed in the initial (Regular and Extended) windows of registration. We may open up additional two-paper combinations at a later date, which will be notified on the GATE  2025 website. This is subject to the availability of infrastructure and scheduling feasibility.
  • The examination centre of a candidate for the second test paper may be different (but in the same city) from that for the first paper due to infrastructure and scheduling constraints. GATE 2025 shall NOT be liable for any legal obligations arising out of this issue.
  • Under unforeseen circumstances, certain combinations may be removed from the list in the above table at a later date. In such cases, the fee paid towards the second test paper will be refunded to the candidates.

GATE 2025 Eligibility Criteria

Before filing an application, candidates are advised to ensure that they meet the eligibility criteria for GATE 2025.

There are no minimum pass percentage requirements to take the exam.

Age Requirements: The GATE test does not have a specific age requirement

Candidates who are currently studying in the 3rd or higher years of any undergraduate degree program or who have completed any government approved degree program in Engineering/ Technology/ Science/ Architecture/ Humanities are eligible to appear for GATE 2025.

Some Professional Societies/Institutions, which conduct examination in various fields of engineering, are given below.

  • The Institution of Engineers (India) (IE)
  • The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)
  • The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE)
  • The Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI)
  • The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChE)
  • The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
  • The Indian Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIIE)

Candidates who possess certification from any such professional societies must ensure that those examinations are approved by MoE/AICTE/UGC/ UPSC as being equivalent to B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Arch./ B.Planning, etc.

Candidates who have obtained/are pursuing their qualifying degree from countries other than India: Candidates must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or must have completed their Bachelor’s degree (of at least three years duration) in Engineering/ Technology/ Science/ Architecture/ Humanities.

Any candidate fulfilling the above-mentioned criteria is eligible to appear for GATE 2025.

Note:

  • Candidates pursuing any higher degree or in possession of a degree higher than that mentioned in the table below, will be allowed to appear for GATE 2025.
  • Candidates with B.Sc./B.A./B.Com. degrees (3-year program) desirous of seeking admission to Masters programs in IITs and IISc may refer to JAM 2025.

GATE 2025 Application Process

Candidates who meet the eligibility conditions have to apply online on https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/.

GATE 2025 Application Steps

  • Register for GATE 2025 – Candidates must first visit the official website for GATE 2025 and register as a “New User”. After successful registration, an application number/ enrollment ID will be sent on the registered email.
  • Fill GATE 2025 Application Form – Login using GOAPS Enrollment ID and Password sent to the registered ID. Fill in the details such as educational qualification, personal details, etc. asked in the application form.
  • Upload Required Documents – Upload scanned documents including Passport-size Photograph, Signature, Eligibility Certificate, SC/ST Certificate and PwD Certificate as per the given guidelines above.
  • Pay Application Fees – Based on the category, candidates must pay the application fee through credit card, debit card, or net banking.
  • Final Submission – Before submitting the application form, a candidate must read and accept the declaration statement. Once the declaration has been accepted, candidates can submit the application form.

Data Required for Filling the Online Application Form in GATE 2025

  1. Personal information (name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parents’ name, parents’ mobile number, etc.).
    • The name of the candidate in the application form must be exactly the same as that in the valid photo ID, which the candidate MUST produce in original while appearing for GATE-2025 examination at the centre.
    • GATE 2025 scorecard will be issued as per the name entered in the application form.
    • Prefixes/titles such as Mr / Shri / Dr / Mrs / Smt / Prof / Capt / Maj / Lt / Col / Er / Ar, etc. MUST NOT be used.
  2. Address for communication (including PIN code).
  3. Eligibility degree details.
  4. GATE paper(s) and their codes in which the candidate wishes to appear.
  5. THREE choices of GATE examination cities (from the same zone).
  6. Net-banking /debit card / credit card / UPI / wallet details for fee payment.

Documents Required For Filling the Online Application Form in Gate 2025

  1. High quality image of candidate’s photograph conforming to the requirements specified in the Information Brochure.
  2. High quality image of candidate’s signature conforming to the requirements specified in the Information Brochure.
  3. Scanned copy of Category (SC/ST) certificate in pdf format (if applicable).
  4. Scanned copy of PwD Certificate in pdf format (if applicable).
  5. Scanned copy of Certificate of Dyslexia in pdf format (if applicable).
  6. Scanned copy of valid photo Identity document: Aadhar-UID (preferable)/ Passport/ PAN Card/ Voter ID/ Driving License.
  7.  The photo ID must have Name, Date of birth of the candidate and unique photo ID number. This photo ID must be carried in original to the examination hall for verification.

Choice of Examination City: A candidate can choose THREE cities from the list given above. All the three choices must be from the same GATE 2025 zone. GATE 2025 reserves the right to add a new city or remove an existing one, and allot a city that may not be from any of the choices selected by the candidate.

Withdrawal of International Centres: GATE 2025 will be conducted only in centres within India. It will NOT be conducted in centres outside India. Foreign nationals and Indian citizens residing abroad may appear for GATE 2025, by paying the full application fee (Rs. 1800 per test paper), but they must choose examination cities within India. They must make their own arrangements for travel and accommodation to appear for the exam at an assigned centre within India.

  • The GATE Exam comprises both Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • There is a negative marking for the multiple-choice questions while no marks will be deducted for the numerical answer type questions.
