About CESS Hyderabad

• Established in 1980, the Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) is an autonomous research institution supported by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi and the Government of Telangana.
• The Centre’s research revolves around issues related to the economy, polity and society with a special emphasis on India and the state of Telangana among others.

CESS in collaboration with Telangana University, Nizamabad invites applications for admission into regular Ph.D Programme in Development Studies for the academic year 2023-2024 in the following disciplines:

• Economics
• Sociology/Anthropology/Social Work
• Development Statistics (related to research areas of CESS)
• Political Science/Public Administration
• Commerce/ Business Management (related to research areas of CESS) 

Note: The above disciplines include allied subjects as follows:

• Economics – Agricultural Economics (M.Sc Agriculture);
• Development Statistics – Statistics (M.A), Statistics (M.Sc), Mathematics (M.Sc);
• Commerce – Master of Business Administration (MBA).

The candidates from these subjects can also apply, provided they fulfil the eligibility criteria, but the Degree shall be awarded only in the five categories of subjects mentioned above.

• Industry, Service Sector, International Trade and Services;
• Multidimensional Poverty, Food Security, Employment and Unemployment, Rural Labour Market;

• Gender Studies, Tribal Studies, Social Inclusion and Inclusive Growth & Development, Public Policy.

Academic Curriculum and Duration

• The Programme involves coursework for one year and a Ph.D thesis.
• The duration of the programme will be five years of which one year is for course work; and four years for completion of Research/ thesis work after registration for Ph.D.
• The Research/Thesis work will be taken up only after completing the coursework and Registration for Ph.D

Seats

• Total number of seats: 12 (The Centre reserves the right not to fill all the seats if suitable candidates are not found).
• Statutory reservations will be followed as per Government of Telangana norms.

Financial Assistance/Fellowships

• The selected scholars may avail ICSSR fellowships on a competitive basis after registration.
• Scholars are encouraged to avail fellowship through various national fellowships such as UGC– JRF, RGNF, and Ministry of Tribal Welfare etc.
• The selected candidates belonging to SC/ST categories with annual income less than the prescribed limit may avail the fee concession.
• The Inclusive Development Unit of the Institute provides two fellowships to scholars working in the area of “Inclusive Development”.

Accommodation

• Hostel accommodation is fully available for girls and moderately for boys on campus for the outstation students.
• The rent for the hostel room will be charged as per the rules.

Eligibility Criteria for CESS Hyderabad PhD Admission 2023-24

• Candidates for admission to the Ph.D programme should qualify and pass Post-Graduate Degree with at least 55 percent marks or its equivalent Grade [50 percent marks for SC/ST/ Differently-Abled Categories] in the concerned subject from any recognised university. (OR)
• An M.Phil Degree in the subject concerned from any recognized university.
• Candidates qualified in the National level tests in UGC-NET, State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) or Candidates in UGC–FDP (Faculty Development Programme) and Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship holders.

CESS Hyderabad PhD Admission 2023-24 Application Process

• Application can be submitted Online. Alternatively, applications can be downloaded and duly filled in application form along with self-attested copies of the above documents should be sent/submitted to: “The Dean, Division of Graduate Studies, Centre For Economic and Social Studies, Nizamiah Observatory Campus, Begumpet, Hyderabad – 500016”.

List of Documents to be submitted

• Application should be submitted in the prescribed format
• Age Proof –SSLC Certificate or any other relevant document
• Master’s Degree Certificate and Marks Card (Provisional marks card obtained and signed by the relevant authority of the University in case second year PG results are awaited
• M.Phil certificate (if applicable)
• UGC-NET-JRF Certificate/letter (if applicable)
• Candidates in the following categories should submit self-attested copies of the latest relevant certificates from competent authorities.
  • SC/ST candidates – Caste certificate
  • BC candidates –BC Certificate
  • The person with Disability (PWD) (with 40% disability) candidates– PWD Certificate
• Applications of eligible candidates working in Government Departments and Public sector undertakings should be forwarded through proper channel along with a ‘No objection’ Certificate from the competent authority
• Research proposal (1000 words)
• Copies of academic publications (if any)

• Application Fee – Rs.1000/-

Selection Procedure

• Admissions are based on an Entrance Test and Interview for eligible candidates.
• As per the UGC notification, the selection of candidates for the PhD programme will be based on an entrance test (70% weightage) followed by an interview (30% weightage) of candidates who qualify in the entrance test.
• UGC JRF fellowship candidates are exempted from the entrance test. They have to attend the personal interview.
• In case of an Offline Entrance Test conducted at CESS, Hyderabad, the Centre will reimburse to-and-fro sleeper class train fare/bus fare to the outstation candidates by the shortest route from the place mentioned in the application (communication address) to Hyderabad (whichever fare is less) for attending the written test, only on production of the evidence of the travel. For applicants from Hyderabad, no conveyance will be paid by CESS. It may kindly be noted that CESS will not provide accommodation, and it is to be arranged by the applicant himself/herself.

Entrance Test

• An entrance test will be conducted Online/Offline by the Centre for admission to the Ph.D Programme.
• Qualifying marks in the entrance test will be 50%, provided that a relaxation of 5% of marks (from 50% to 45%) shall be allowed for candidate belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layers)/Differently-abled category in the entrance test. Candidates who qualify in the entrance examination shall be called for an interview.
• The medium of examination for the Entrance Test shall be English only.
• The entrance exam consists of 2 sections –
  • Section I Research Methodology,
  • Section II – Respective Discipline.

Interview

• Candidates who qualify in the entrance examination shall be called for an interview.
