University of Kerala PhD Admission 2024 (Jan) Eligibility Criteria

• Any 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed. OR
• Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. OR
• Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme.
• Qualified in the entrance test conducted by this University or National Eligibility Test conducted by the UGC/CSIR /ICAR/ICMR or GATE or State Level Eligibility Test conducted by the Kerala Government or Fellowship awarded by the Central and State Govt. Departments/Agencies as approved by the University. The validity period if any of such qualifications are counted for granting admission.
• Candidates who have passed the M.Phil Programme with a minimum of Grade ’B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent. The M Phil Degree shall be in the discipline concerned in which the applicant is seeking registration and degree should be obtained from a recognised University.
• Candidates possessing a degree considered equivalent to M.Phil degree of an Indian Institution, from a foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standard of educational institution, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D programme.
• A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the State Government / University from time to time.

Exemption from Entrance Test

The following candidates are exempted from entrance test –

• Regular College/University teachers who have 7 or more year of teaching experience are exempted from the entrance test.
• Scientists working in approved research laboratories either owned or managed by the Central/State Government or in Autonomous Research Institute of National Status, with 7 years experience in Grade Scientists having two research papers published in recognized research journals of the subject concerned approved by the UGC.
• Candidates with DBT/JRF are permitted to register for research leading to Ph.D Degree in Biotechnology.
• Candidate with DST- INSPIRE fellowship
• Those candidates who qualify UGC-NET/JRF, UGC-CSIR-NET/JRF, SLET, GATE and Research Fellowships of Central or State Government Departments/ Agencies as approved by the University, as the case may be.
• Teacher Fellowship holders and M.Phil Degree holders seeking registration for Ph.D shall be required to qualify Entrance Test in case registration is sought in a different discipline other than that specialized at PG/M.Phil Degree levels respectively.
• Awardees of DST Women Scientist Scheme by the Department of Science & Technology (DST)
• Candidates who have passed the M.Phil Programme with a minimum of Grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent.
• Awardees of VSSC-JRF/ UGC-NFSC/ UGC-NFOBC/ UGC-NFPwD.

University of Kerala PhD Admission 2024 (Jan) Application Process

• Candidates are requested to visit official website of Research Portal of University of Kerala: www.research.keralauniversity.ac.in
• Click on the Login/Register.
• If not registered, choose register option and enter your name, mobile number and email number carefully. You may then click to register. An email with login credentials will be sent to the entered email id.
• If already registered, then login to the portal and complete the one-time profile asper guidelines mentioned in the portal.
• All relevant documents proving qualification and eligibility should be uploaded before submitting the profile.
• Please ensure that the details entered are correct before submission. Please note that details cannot be edited once submitted.
• Candidate can pay the registration fee only through the online payment facility by clicking on “Proceed to pay” button; no other mode of payment will be accepted. Please note that Fees once paid will not be refunded.

Applicants for subjects which are not being offered at the University Departments should submit the print outs of the applications along with all documents to the Registrar, University of Kerala on or before 16.01.2024.

UGC/CSIR-JRF/DBT-JRF/DST-JRF(INSPIRE)/GATE/UGC-MANF/VSSC-JRF/UGCNFSC/UGC-NFOBC/UGC-NFPwD candidates pursuing research are permitted to join Ph.D research first, if they are otherwise eligible for Ph.D registration in the concerned subject, and then apply for Ph.D registration in the next immediate session itself and to grant them Ph.D registration with effect from the date of joining the fellowship at par with UGC JRF in the matter of admission and registration for research leading to Ph.d Degree. They are directed to submit a request duly endorsed by the Head of the Department specifying the details to the Registrar, University of Kerala on or before 16.01.2024.

Registration Fee

• University shall admit students who qualify for fellowship/scholarship in UGC-NET/UGC-CSIR NET/GATE/CEED and similar National level tests / State level tests approved by the University exclusively for this purpose, based on an interview. University shall also admit the candidates who have qualified M.Phil. degree and Ph.D. entrance examination conducted by the University, prior to January 2024, based on an interview. And / Or
• Provided that for the selection of candidates based on the entrance test conducted by the University, a weightage of 70 % for the entrance test and 30 % for the performance in the interview/ viva- voce shall be given. (Not applicable to the candidates who have passed Ph.D entrance examination conducted by the University prior to January 2024)
