MGSU Bikaner PhD Admission 2023-24 Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates who have completed: A 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or qualifications declared equivalent to the master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of the educational institution. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
- Provided that a candidate seeking admission after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
- Candidates who have completed the M.Phil. programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed or equivalent qualification from a foreign educational institution accredited by an assessment and accreditation agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. programme. A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Part Time PhD
- Ph.D. programmes through part-time mode will be permitted, provided all the conditions as stipulated in University Research Ordinance are fulfilled.
- The candidate will produce a ‘No Objection Certificate’ for part time Ph.D. programme from competent authority of the organization where the candidate is employed. Such certificate should clearly state that :
- i. The candidate is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis.
- ii. His/her official duties permit him/her to devote sufficient time for research.
- iii. If required, he/she will be relieved from the duty to complete the course work

MGSU Bikaner PhD Admission 2023-24 Application Process
- Candidates have to apply online on the link available at university website.
- Application be filled online from 02.12.2023 to 16.12.2023 and hard copy to be submitted to Dr. Abhishek Vashishtha, Coordinator, PET-2023, Directorate of Research, Maharaja Ganga Singh University, Bikaner University, Jaisalmer Road, NH-15, Bikaner 334004, Rajasthan, along with the proof of fees and attested copies of supporting documents

Selection Process
- Selection will be on the basis of PhD Entrance test (PET) & Interview.
- Candidates who have secured 50 % marks in the MCQ based written entrance test shall be eligible to be called for the interview.
- The selection of candidates shall be based on the entrance test and interview conducted by the University. A weightage of 70 % for the entrance test and 30 % for the performance shown in the interview/viva- voce shall be given.
MGSU Bikaner PhD Entrance Test (PET 2023) Details
- The entrance test shall be of qualifying nature with qualifying marks as 50%.
- The syllabus of the entrance test shall consist of 50% portion from research methodology and 50% from subject specific domain.
- The examination will consist of two sections.
- The paper shall consist of 70 objective type multiple choice questions of 1 mark each.
- Section – A shall consist of 35 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) based on Research Methodology (One mark for each question) and Section- B will consist of 35 Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) (One mark for each question) from the subject concerned.
- There will be no negative marking.
- The test shall be of 2.00 hours duration (Answers will be marked on OMR sheet).
- A relaxation of 5 % marks will be given in the entrance examination for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/differently-abled category and Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
- The syllabus of the Section- A “Research Methodology” is given on University website. The syllabus of Section – B (Subject Specific) will be the same as that of UGC/CSIR NET examination.
- Qualified candidates, maximum twice the number of seats, shall be called for interview/viva-voce before the DRC to discuss their research interest/area and give a presentation on the same.
- State-level reservation and admission policy shall be applicable. viii. If the number of seats is equal to or more than the qualified candidates, the DRC may recommend all or less number of candidates depending upon the viva voce/interview.
- If the number of seats is less than the number of qualified candidates, the final selection shall be made on the basis of combined merit in the qualifying test and viva voce/interview.
Syllabus for Ph.D. Entrance Test Section A Research Methodology Common for all Subjects
- Research Foundation: Meaning, Objectives, Utility. Concept of theory, Empiricism, Deductive, and Inductive theory. Characteristics of Scientific methods. Understanding the language of research : Concept, Construct, Variable. Research Process, Research Gaps.
- Identification & Formulation: Definition and formulation of the research problem, Necessity of defining the problem, Importance of Literature Review in defining a Problem. Research Question : Investigating Question, Measurement Issues, Hypothesis : Qualities of a good hypothesis, Null hypothesis and alternative Hypothesis. Hypothesis Testing : Logic & importance.
- Research Design: Features of a good research Design, Exploratory Research Design : Concept, Types and uses; Descriptive Research Design : concept, types and uses; Experimental Design : Concept of Independent & Dependent Variables.
- Data Collection and Analysis: Execution of the research, Observation and Collection of Data, Methods of Data collection, Hypothesis testing, Generalization and Interpretation.
- Sampling: Concept of Statistical population, Sample, Sampling Frame, Sampling Error, Sample size, Nonresponse. Characteristics of a good sample. Probability Sample, Simple Random Sample, Systematic Sample, Stratified Random Sample & Multi-stage Sampling. Determining size of the sample; Practical considerations in sampling and Sample size.
- Interpretation of Data and Paper Writing: Layout of a Research Paper, Impact factor of journals, When and where to publish? Use of Encyclopedias, Research Guides, Handbook etc., Academic databases for concerned discipline.
- Reporting and Thesis writing: Structure and components of Scientific Reports, Types of Report, Technical Reports and Thesis, Significance; Different steps in the preparation: Layout, Structure and Language of typical reports. Illustrations and Tables. Bibliography, Referencing and Footnotes. Oral presentation: Planning, Preparation, Practice. Making presentation: Use of visual aids, Importance of effective Communication.
- Results and Ethics: Environmental impacts, Ethical issues, Ethical Committees, Commercialization, Copyright, Royalty, Intellectual Property Rights and Patent Law-Trade-related aspects of intellectual property Rights. Ethical issues Related to publishing, Plagiarism and Self-Plagiarism. Citation and Acknowledgment. Reproducibility and Accountability.
