- Regular/Full Time: A student in this category works full-time for his/her PhD degree. He / she may get a fellowship / assistantship or may be self-financed.
- Sponsored (full-time): A student in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing research in the Institute on a full-time basis. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter must be attached with the application
- Part-time: A student in this category is a professionally employed person, who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He / She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which He / She is employed must be enclosed at the time of application.

IIIT Guwahati PhD Admission 2024 (Jan) Eligibility Criteria
Department of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE)
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
OR - MSc (CS)/MSc (IT)/MCA/Equivalent Non-Tech Master’s Degrees in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks having a GATE/NET/SLET score in CS/IT.
OR - Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks.
Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE)
- Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
OR - MSc (Electronics) or Equivalent Non-Tech Master’s Degrees in the relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks having a GATE/NET/SLET score in ECE/EE/IN/CS/BM
OR - Four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences or equivalent in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0 or 65% of marks
Humanities and Social Sciences(HSS)
- Master’s degree in Economics, Business Administration, and Political Science with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.
- Candidates with MPhil degree/ NET-JRF will be given preference.
Department of Science and Mathematics(S&M)
- MA/ MSc/ MTech in Mathematics/Statistics with at least 60% marks or a CPI of 6.5.

*A candidate needs to pay the hostel and mess fees only when a student joins a hostel. Hostel rent will be charged on a pro-rata basis (semester of 6 months with a charge of ₹12,500/- for the whole semester) based on when the student joins a hostel with advance mess fee ₹24000/- for 6 months.

- Shortlisting will be done based on the availability of seats and the academic performance of the candidates.
- A candidate merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria may not be shortlisted.
