Duration of the PhD Course
The PhD course duration shall be minimum three years for all candidates. The maximum period of course shall not exceed five years.
Extension beyond the period of 5 years can be given for a maximum period of 6 months on the recommendation of Academic cell/ DRC and final approval will be by Executive Director AIIMS Gorakhpur based on genuine reason. Course completion implies thesis submission and assessment.
AIIMS Gorakhpur PhD Admission 2023 (Session II) Eligibility Criteria
A candidate seeking admission to the course of study leading to the award of a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) must have prescribed educational qualifications, funding for their research projects, or have sponsorship for the entire duration of PhD as mentioned below.
Educational Qualifications for the PhD course
Medical
Medical Qualification
- MBBS/BDS with minimum 55% aggregate marks or MD/MS/MDS/DM/M.Ch.in the subject concerned or Diplomat of National Board of Examination.
- Candidates who have obtained any of these degrees from medical colleges which are not recognized by the Medical Council of India/ NMC shall not be eligible to apply.
Nursing Qualification
- Candidates holding a n M.Sc. degree with minimum 55% aggregate marks in Nursing course will also be eligible for PhD admission in the College of Nursing.
Non-Medical
- For non-medical Candidates eligibility shall be a Master degree (02- year course) awarded by UGC approved Indian University or equivalent in Medical subjects (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Immunology, Genetics) /MBiotech / M- Tech (Biotechnology) only will be eligible in their respective concerned field.
- Candidates having eligibility under non- medical category should have at least 55% marks or equivalent in the last eligibility examination qualified. Candidates possessing Master’s Degree through distance learning courses shall not be eligible for PhD.
Additional Requirements
Apart from educational qualifications, candidates must fulfill ANY of the following criteria to become eligible for PhD:
- Candidates who have qualified for the National Entrance Tests leading to the award of a fellowship tenable at AIIMS Gorakhpur.
- In-service or sponsored candidates who will receive their salary/stipend from the sponsoring/parent organization during the whole period of their PhD, along with NOC from them for the full time PhD course.
Relaxation
- A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% (i.e. 50%) will be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled, and Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in the eligibility.
- The eligibility marks of 55% or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever the grading system is followed are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures, if any.
Candidates from Foreign educational institutions
- Candidates from Foreign educational institutions having a degree equivalent to a post-graduate degree of MPhil or MS/ MD from a reputed and well-accredited foreign educational institution abided by statutory authority, can be considered after approval of the Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) if any Biomedical science or Health science related topic is proposed in India with required funding as a full-time course.
- Final approval should be from the Executive Director AIIMS, Gorakhpur for the PhD course eligibility of foreign nationals, as per norms.
- a) Foreign nationals shall be required to fill in the prescribed application and pass the entrance test
- b) Foreign nationals are required to send their applications through Diplomatic Channel.
Mandatory Criteria
PhD course program, AIIMS Gorakhpur is a full-time research program.
- Candidates working under Central Govt./Semi Govt./Autonomous organization should submit their applications through the proper channel i.e. employer. They will be required to submit a ‘No Objection Certificate” from their employer, (Head of the institute) before they are allowed to join the PhD Course.
- Internal applicants from AIIMS Gorakhpur as Faculty/ regular employees for PhD registration will be considered as in-service candidates as per guidelines laid down in section “D” of prospectus.
- A candidate is allowed to submit application form for PhD in one specialty/department only.
- No financial aid of any sort will be provided by the institute, AIIMS Gorakhpur for research work/stipend/any other form.

- Applicants can download the Application Form from AIIMS website.
- All applicants are advised to read the Prospectus carefully before filling up the Application form.
- Both, Online google form as well as the Hard copy application have to be submitted with required annexures.

Selection Process
- Candidates will be allocated seats in order of their merit in the exam and interview by PhD Doctoral Research Committee (DRC).
- Successful candidates will be subjected to eligibility criteria of respective projects before admission.
- Candidates should have either a sponsorship / fellowship from UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DST/DBT/similar govt. organizations. No financial aid of any sort will be provided by the institute, AIIMS Gorakhpur for research work/stipend/any other form.
Selection Procedure
- Selection for PhD registration will be performance-based.
- A four-stage performance evaluation will be done as follows:
- STAGE I :30 Marks (30 MCQs of 1 Mark each) Aptitude-related MCQs covering Research Methodology.
- STAGE-II: 40 Marks (40 MCQs of 1 Mark each) MCQs biostatistics, research ethics and recent advances
- Total Marks (Stage I + II): 70 (30+40)
- Total Duration (Stage I + II): 90 Minutes
- Candidates must score at least 35 marks (50%) or 50th percentile in Stages I and II (Combined) to be eligible for Stage III. Candidates who do not fulfil the criteria to qualify for stage III will not be eligible for selection.
- Stage-III: After combining the marks of Stages I, II, and special weightage, three (03) times as many candidates as the number of seats in a department will be called for departmental clinical/practical/lab-based assessment (carrying20 marks). These marks will be added to the marks of stages I + II + special weightage to determine the final total marks. It may include OSCE / OSPE.
- Candidates who secure 50% marks in Stage-I, II & III Combined (i.e., 50/100) [including special weightage] shall be eligible for stage IV.
- Stage-IV – RESULT: Includes personal interaction with the Board/ Doctoral Research Committee (DRC) where the candidate has to present the proposed research plan for the PhD course and its funding source. Final merit list for allotment will be based on the result of the Board interaction.
Special Weightage
Medical / Dental candidates
10 marks will be added to the total score of Stages I and II for candidates who fulfil both the following criteria:
- Passed stages I & II with 50% or 50th percentile marks and are eligible for stage III
- They also hold a Medical Degree (DNB/ MD/ MS/ DM/ M.Ch./ MDS) or equivalent from MCI/NMC/DCI recognized colleges respectively.
Non-Medical candidates
10 marks will be added to the total score of Stages I and II for candidates who fulfil both the following criteria:
- Passed stages I & II with 50% or 50th percentile marks and are eligible for stage III
- They also have qualified in any one of the following National Entrance Tests leading to the award of a fellowship tenable at AIIMS, Gorakhpur
- Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF
- ICMR – JRF/SRF
- DBT – JRF
- NBHM screening test
- INSPIRE fellowship
- Other established scientific fellowships
Important
To be eligible for special weightage marks, ALL the following criteria must be fulfilled:
- The result of the above-listed National Entrance Tests must have been declared.
- The award of the fellowship must be based on the result of the above-listed National Entrance Tests.
- The fellowships should be tenable at AIIMS, Gorakhpur.
- Passing of the listed National Entrance Tests is not acceptable as proof of award of fellowship
- The letter of award of fellowship must be attached to the application form.
